Biogas Utilization Systems and H2S Bio-Scrubber Units

Biogas is normally comprises of mixed portions of Methane (CH4), Carbon Dioxide (CO2) and Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) gases. H2S bio-scrubber is used to reduce the content of H2S gas in raw biogas providing a cleaner and less corrosive gas for engine combustion and gas burner. The content of H2S in raw biogas will typically be in the range of 1,000 – 20,000 ppm, which its combustion and humidity in gases can produce Sulfuric Acid and leads to severe corrosion of engine parts, valves and pipes.

Biogas improvement method for removal of hydrogen sulfide Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) removal can be achieved by several methods. Biological process is strongly effective to remove H2S because the operating and capital costs are low-moderate furthermore any chemicals is not required and digester structure are durable. The principle of biogas improving or H2S bio scrubber by using Thiobacilas Sp. microorganisms in a process, microorganisms directly oxidize H2S to sulfur in order to generate energy for cell growth. Biogas is cleaned and better quality suitable for utilization for thermal and electricity production.

Typical biogas outlet from H2S Bio-Scrubber

  • Quantities of hydrogen sulfide (H2S)
  • H2S inlet below 3,000 ppm and H2S outlet between 0-250 ppm
  • Oxygen in biogas is less than 1.5%

H2S Scrubber Unit (Biological Process)\r\n\r\nThiobacillus Bacteria is an absorber/media converts the H2S to elemental sulfur (S8). Treated outlet gas can readily meet a less than 100 ppm H2S specification (typical requirement for biogas) or as low as 5 ppm.\r\n\r\nThe biological sulfur slurry produced may be used for agricultural purposes or purified to a high quality (99%+) sulfur cake.
